Natural light is essential for a healthy morning routine for summer

Healthy Morning Routine for Summer

A healthy morning routine for summer starts with slowing down and creating space for a more intentional start. The light comes in softer, the air feels fresher, and it’s the perfect opportunity to reset your habits and reconnect with yourself. Whether you’re working from home or packing for a weekend away, starting your day with purpose can make all the difference in how you show up—for yourself and for others.

These simple rituals make up my go-to healthy morning routine for summer— they’re simple habits that have helped me feel more grounded, energized, and clear-headed—even on busy days. Here’s how I’m easing into summer mornings this season, and a few tips you might want to try too.

Simple Habits for a Healthy Morning Routine This Summer

☀️ 1. Let in the Natural Light

One of the easiest ways to wake up more gently (and naturally) is to open your curtains as soon as you get up. Letting the morning light stream in helps reset your circadian rhythm, which can improve energy levels and even your sleep quality over time.

If you’re someone who struggles to get moving in the morning, consider sleeping with your blinds slightly cracked or investing in a sunrise alarm clock. That soft glow in the early hours really does help you start the day on a calmer, more centered note.

🛏️ 2. Make Your Bed—Quickly

It takes less than two minutes, but making your bed has a ripple effect. It signals to your brain that the day has begun, creates instant order in your space, and gives you one small win right away. It’s a tiny habit with a big payoff, especially if you’re working from home and want to feel more productive.

Teaching this habit to my kids over the years has led to some interesting and somewhat hilarious conversations with their reasonings as to why this habit is useless and how they don’t care if someone sees their mess – then as they’ve matured, they suddenly turn a corner and are embarrassed when an unexpected visitor comes into their room and sees their messy bed.

💧 3. Hydrate Before Coffee or Breakfast

Before anything else—before breakfast, emails, or caffeine—I always start my day with hydration. I’ve been using Re-Lyte Hydration by Redmond Life for a couple years now, and it’s been a total game changer for my health! Not only does it help me feel more alert, but it’s also been essential in keeping my migraines at bay.

I have struggled with chronic migraines for 20+ years and after completely changing my diet and exercising regularly, I was able to limit them to a few a month. But still…getting a few migraines a month is debilitating and I really don’t like to take medicine if I don’t have to. After years of research, learning the importance hydration plays in our bodies was the key. I have always been a huge water-drinker, but lacking the salt in my body to hold in the water was the missing link.

Drinking the hydration first thing in the morning sets you up for steadier energy throughout the day. Especially if you drink coffee/caffeine that depletes hydration. Let your hydration soak in for about 30 minutes before introducing caffeine and watch what a difference it makes!

Pro Tip: Then later in the day when you’re reaching for another caffeine drink, go for the hydration instead and you won’t experience the caffeine jitters, sugar crash or lethargy you used to!

🍳 4. Eat a Nourishing, High-Protein Breakfast

I’ve found that starting the day with protein makes a huge difference in how I feel—especially because I want to stay full without feeling heavy. Something I love and look forward to every morning is a few scrambled eggs with spinach and sometimes a side of Ezekiel Bread toast. It’s simple, satisfying, and fuels me enough to have energy and get focused.

Fueling up with protein is a key part of any healthy morning routine for summer, especially if you’re balancing kids, work, or workouts. They help regulate blood sugar and keep that mid-morning crash away.

💆‍♀️ 5. Listen While You Get Ready

When I’m doing my skincare routine and often putting on a little makeup, I like to pair this time with something uplifting. Some days it’s an audiobook on my Audible app, other days it’s a podcast that encourages or motivates me—and some days, it’s just a quiet moment with my Bible app playing softly in the background.

👉 Try Audible with a free 30-day trial – If you haven’t tried audiobooks yet, I highly recommend it for those peaceful, screen-free moments in the morning. You can start your day with inspiration while still easing into the routine.

👗 6. Get Dressed for the Day

Even if you’re working from home or staying in, getting dressed signals to your brain that you’re ready to show up. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just something clean, light, and put together. A breezy linen set or your favorite dress can shift your whole mood.

On summer days, I like to stick with breathable fabrics and easy layers. If you’ve built a capsule wardrobe (like my Coastal Chic Summer picks), this part becomes almost effortless.
